I translated the current thread in English and responded in English as my written German is not that good.
I was coming here to read how people where receiving ArcaOS 5.1.1. in German. And maybe announce that we made Warpstock Europe 2025 cheaper and tried to listen to the feedback I got. However...
You know Thoralf at Sigurd his OS/2 meeting November last year you said the same thing as you typed here in this discussion.
I decided at the time to just at Sigurd his meeting not respond to your unsupportive/unconstructive comments. The comment you made that Mensys was the cause of so many developers leaving OS/2.
The same remark as you type now. Can you please present the full picture next time and not the simplified gossip magazine summary ? Thank you.
Was the project management perfect at Mensys, no its was not. But project management was not the answer.
If people knew what the budget was for eCS development at Mensys well good luck. It was shoe string development budget (it was small).
The main comment was at the time that eCS 2.0. took soooo extremely long to get out. Well lets see what was done in broad lines:
1. Bootable JFS was created + integration in the installer.
2. ACPI project was created with IOAPIC support (high IRQ support).
3. Alot of drivers had to be updated to support high IRQ's.
4. Panaorama was created at the first generic GRADD driver with MTRR support.
5. I seem to recall we got Arca Mapper with Samba into eCS 2.0. and 2.1.
So yes Thoralf, that is being "bogged down in useless details" ?
There is possibly more I forgot about what was new in eCS 2.0.. But you know Thoralf, your negative talk is cheap. I worked on these projects and working on such low level projects and integrating this into eCS. Its just a job of very long days and no project management would helped here. It seems this typical German thing thinking project management will solve things.
That was at least the main comment about getting eCS 2.0. at the time that there where so many beta's. Well you know not strange considering the massive overhaul's done without help from IBM ? I am still in touch with people who used to work for IBM on OS/2 in Boca Raton and are simply amazed what has been done on OS/2.
"Bogged down in useless details." You want to know Thoralf how much time it took to get ACPI 3.18 to some working level ? Code was introduced to patch out OEMHLP from IBM in ACPI. Just a normal walk in the park, "just a useless detail". Do not even get me started how difficult to get IOAPIC stuff working. And ACPI had working suspend resume to a degree. But because of SMP kernel limitations it did not work. Again "all bogged down in in useless details". All stuff project management would solved, yes, uuuhuuu no.
Mensys had a small budget for OS/2 development. And getting an OS/2 license agreement with IBM is not cheap. I can not disclose details as it was under NDA. And that all has to be paid for the development. And at Mensys people worked on eCS part time even. And a lot of work was done unpaid in the evening hours by me and Joachim! Every year most if not all the money of eCS was pushed back into the product development. You want to know how much money was spent on ACPI development by Mensys. As we did not have a developer we could pay for from Western Europe. It wass simply to expensive.
Arca Noae is most likely in the same position when it comes to the budget. As in working on OS/2 since 2005 was never a quick rich scheme. Its an illusion. No normal company would have picked up OS/2 development as it would have never been a money maker. (I mean developing eComStation or ArcaOS).
Don Lucio his posting reflects a more realistic view in that sense, at least that is my opinion.
When it comes to the German translation of ArcaOS into German. Yes some people would have wanted a fully translated product other people would have accepted less. Was the communication from AN good on the status of the German release, not it was not. As ArcaOSNewComer as a developer writes its a small compamy AN. Just like Mensys was.
You do not have to take my word for it, look on the about ArcaOS website section and see how people are listed. And most people work ArcaOS part time...

Doing OS/2 in 2025 is to boldly go where no fools have gone before. (Taken the Star Trek quote). Or put differently not many people who have been willing to take up the job in the first place.
So next time Thorolf please come up with a more truthfull summary and not this half baked big company manager view. Companies like Mensys and Arca Noae that worked on since IBM stopped working on it encounter plenty stuff you could never find out properly. Simply because of lack of staff for which there was never the funding.
Thanks!
